As part of the new building construction project that will house the UPEI Faculty of Medicine, patient medical home, Psychology Training Clinic, Adult ADHD Clinic, and interprofessional health simulation and clinical training centre, the access road (also known as Alumni Road) from the intersection of University Avenue and Enman Crescent to the intersection of the campus perimeter road and the sports fields will be closed from June 23 to August 14. This closure is necessary to allow contractors to safely install new underground services and add road access to the new facility.

In advance of the UPEI Community Town Hall taking place on Monday, June 26, the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies (IKERAS) along with Elder-in-Residence Dr. Judy Clark and Advisor on Indigenous Affairs Corinne Chappell are offering smudging to all faculty, staff, and students from 11:00 am–12:00 noon at the Indigenous tipi located in the quadrangle between the W.A. Murphy Student Centre and the Kelley Memorial Building.  

Smudging is an Indigenous cultural practice and involves the burning of substances such as sweet grass, cedar, and sage. The practice is based on traditional beliefs that the smoke produced is a means of purification and creates a positive mindset for those involved in an activity or event. The smoke and scent produced during a smudge is minimal and often dissipates quickly.

This is an opportunity for the University community to speak openly and freely about UPEI's culture, climate, and the Rubin Thomlinson report as we begin our journey of listening and developing an action plan.

The Town Hall will also be available live through Zoom for UPEI community members who are unable or prefer to attend virtually. While we want to be as inclusive as possible, the Town Hall is for members of the UPEI community, so attendance on Zoom will be restricted to those who have an @upei.ca email address. The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Officer will be available in a private room (PAC 110AS) near the Town Hall venue to provide assistance and support to anyone who may be triggered by the discussion.  

In addition, counsellors from TELUS Health (formerly Lifeworks) Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP) will be available in the Psychology Training Centre, second level of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre, to provide confidential one-to-one support on Monday, June 26, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and on Tuesday, June 27, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. To see a counsellor on a confidential basis, please check in at the reception desk.  

UPEI has a number of resources for students through UPEI Student Affairs, including academic advising and personal counselling (studentserv@upei.ca), and the International Student Office (irostu@upei.ca).

The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program (QES) was created to improve global talent exchange between Canada and other nations. The program aims to develop the next generation of innovative leaders and community builders by providing enriched academic, professional, and cross-cultural experiences and by facilitating lasting local and global community engagement.

QES will support projects that focus on health, education, social, and economic development, while enhancing academic diplomacy. Projects will support international study, research, or internships for outbound Canadian students and/or study and research for inbound international graduate students. All QES-funded activities must be for academic credit/recognition.

Canadian universities are invited to submit multi-year project proposals seeking funding of up to $300,000 CAD.

Anyone interested in applying to the call for proposals must first confirm the support of their supervisor (e.g., chair/dean/director), then submit a letter of intent (LOI) to Research Services by July 4, 2023 (researchservices@upei.ca). The LOI should be a maximum one-page document outlining:

• Project objectives, activities, and expected results, and how the project contributes to the objectives of the QES program

• Confirmed and anticipated partner organization(s)

• Anticipated number of outgoing Canadian interns and/or incoming international scholars

• Anticipated budget including contributions from other sources

Applicants will be notified by July 7, 2023, of the result of the LOI pre-selection process. The deadline for Canadian universities to submit their selected application is July 21, 2023.

UPEI personal trainer Derek Smith will be leading a small group training session on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 to 5:00 pm, July 4 to August 3. Training will be held in a private studio. The regular cost is $150+hst per person. However, UPEI faculty and staff have a discounted rate due to fitness training subsidies, so they pay only $75+hst per person. The rate for UPEI students is $65+hst per person.

To register, log into recreation.upei.ca and click on the Fitness Programming Icon. Then click on the Small Group Training iicon. From there, click on Small Group and follow the prompts. UPEI students, faculty, and staff MUST click on the green UPEI LOGIN button and then enter their UPEI email address and password. This is the only way you'll see your appropriate pricing. The University of Prince Edward Island community is saddened to learn of the recent death of the Honourable Marion L. Reid.

The Honourable Marion Reid had a long and distinguished career—as a teacher for 21 years and as a member of the PEI Legislative Assembly serving three consecutive terms. She obtained her teacher’s certificate from Prince of Wales College in 1946, and continued her education at both Saint Dunstan's University and UPEI while raising her family. During her time in the legislature, she served as Deputy Speaker and as Speaker—the first woman on Prince Edward Island to hold both positions. She also served as the 37th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward from 1990 to 1995—again, the first woman to hold this position in Prince Edward Island and also in Atlantic Canada. 

In 1997, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from UPEI for her outstanding career as an educator and faithful representative for the people of Prince Edward Island. And in 2011, she received a Distinguished Alumni Award for her contributions to the Island community and to public service.

She was a member of the PEI Famous Five, a group of women who in 1993 held five of the most influential legislative positions in the province. Along with Lieutenant Governor Reid, the group included then Premier Catherine Callbeck, the current Chancellor of UPEI; Leader of the Opposition Pat Mella; Speaker of the House Nancy Guptill; and Deputy Speaker Elizabeth "Libbe" Hubley. This was the first—and last—time in Canadian history that five women held these positions at the same time.

The flags in front of Kelley Memorial Building have been lowered to half-mast in honour of Mrs. Reid. The University extends condolences to Mrs. Reid's family, friends, and colleagues.
