Happy New Year!
The UPEI Health Centered Research Clinic is looking for full/part-time undergraduate students for the Connections program starting at the end of January 2023!
Would you like to meet new friends and be involved in an inclusive and non-judgmental environment to learn about food, health, stress, coping, and physical activity?
The staff at the Health Centered Research Clinic at UPEI is offering a free eight-session program to help connect undergraduate students to provide an environment for learning on a variety of topics around health and well-being and connecting to the student community. Snacks will be provided at each session!
This free program will include a total of eight weekly group education sessions with a registered dietitian and health promoter and exercise sessions with a kinesiologist (plus open gym times) located in the lower level of the Steel Building.

The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) is pleased to partner with Holland College and the University of Prince Edward Island to host the 2023 annual STLHE/SAPES conference at the Delta Convention Centre in Charlottetown from June 14-16, 2023. (Pre-conference workshops will take place on June 13.) Submissions are welcome from anyone interested in presenting to a multidisciplinary audience about teaching and learning in higher education. If you are going up for tenure or promotion soon and are thinking about the details of your teaching dossier, then this session is for you. Dr. Kathy Gottschall-Pass will talk about some of the things faculty members should focus on for tenure and promotion purposes on Friday, January 27, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm (snow date: February 16). Colleagues are strongly encouraged to review the Teaching Philosophy and Teaching Dossier course materials that are part of the Academic Instructional Skills Program (AISP) first and then come to the in-person workshop where you can focus on T & P specifics. You may have heard a few things about Chat GPT in recent weeks that have piqued your curiosity about artificial intelligence. Join panelists Chris Power, Inge Dorsey, Wendy Shilton, Richard Raiswell, and Andrew Godbout in a discussion of artificial intelligence in university learning on Friday, January 27, at 12:00 pm in the Teaching and Learning Centre, RL 230. NEW! In January 2023, the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research, on behalf of the presidents of Canada’s three research funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC), announced the latest update to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2, 2022), which includes new guidance on streamlining multi-jurisdictional ethics review for minimal risk research. A summary of this and other changes to the TCPS 2 in the new release can be found HERE.
The UPEI REB will be reviewing its policy and procedures in light of this new guidance and looks forward to communicating related changes soon. Montgomery and the Creation of Anne," on Thursday, January 19, at 1 p.m. AST, at Confederation Centre of the Arts in Studio 1. The event will also be livestreamed at https://youtube.com/live/EZKetwmDRTU?feature=share.
Following remarks, the exhibition curator and Montgomery scholar, Dr. Emily Woster, will demonstrate the website, which features the newly digitized manuscript and rarely seen material about Montgomery’s life and legacy.
The exhibition is a project of Confederation Centre of the Arts, L.M. Montgomery Institute, and Robertson Library, University of Prince Edward Island, with funding from Digital Museums Canada.
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths in 2020. About 90 percent of the new cases and deaths worldwide in 2020 occurred in low- and middle-income countries.
According to the World Health Organization (2023), a large majority of cervical cancer (more than 95 per cent) is due to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Two human papillomavirus (HPV) types (16 and 18) are responsible for nearly 50 per cent of high-grade cervical pre-cancers.
HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. Most sexually active women and men will be infected at some point in their lives, and some may be repeatedly infected. More than 90 per cent of the infected populations eventually clear the infection.
Although most HPV infections clear up on their own and most pre-cancerous lesions resolve spontaneously, there is a risk for all women that HPV infection may become chronic, and pre-cancerous lesions progress to invasive cervical cancer.
It takes 15 to 20 years for cervical cancer to develop in women with normal immune systems. It can take only 5 to 10 years in women with weakened immune systems, such as those with untreated HIV infection.
Using condoms and HPV vaccination are two of the ways you can prevent cervical cancer from HPV. Having regular pap screens once you become sexually active can help to detect pre-cancerous cells in the cervix. If cervical cancer is detected, it is curable if detected early.

Overview: The Adult Learner - Course Design and Facilitation Certificate offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of adult learning for individuals who want to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to design and deliver effective and engaging adult training programs. Participants will develop new insights and techniques that will strengthen their training content and approach, learn about designing curriculum to match diverse learning styles (including in-person and online facilitation), organize engaging experiential activities that ensure the achievement of learning objectives, and deliver peer-reviewed interactive training content and facilitation sessions.
Designed for: People who are interested in becoming or improving as facilitators, trainers, consultants, subject matter experts, adult educators, human resource personnel, contract workers, tutors, or similar positions

Although the books come from the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre, you check them out and return them to the Service Desk in Robertson Library. Use your UPEI Campus Card to sign out books. Books may be borrowed for 28 days. Every two months, there will be a new selection of approximately 75 current, popular reading materials.
2022 Governor General’s Literary Awards (GGBooks) and Scotiabank Giller Prize Finalists and Winners
The Library has award-winning Canadian books for you to discover, whatever genre of books you want to read. The display includes the 2022 Governor General’s Literary Awards (GGBooks) finalists and winners in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama.
The Canada Council for the Arts is responsible for administering and promoting the Governor General’s Literary Awards. The awards recognize Canada’s best English-language and French-language books in seven categories and encourage Canadians to read Canadian literature.

Also included in the book display are the longlist, shortlist, and winner of the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Plugins enable you to add additional features and functionality to Moodle, such as new activities, new quiz question types, new reports, integrations with other systems, and many more. UPEI's Moodle has had a number of new plugins added over the fall that you may not be aware of. In this 60-minute workshop, the Teaching and Learning Centre will take you through all those new toys. From sticky notes to mind maps to adaptive quizzes, there are lots of new ways to enhance your Moodle course page for your participants.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a global leader in the development of renewable energy. However, the electricity-generation mix differs dramatically in remote and Indigenous communities throughout the province, which remain almost exclusively reliant on diesel fuel, resulting in numerous energy inequities. While sustainable energies are often promoted for these isolated villages, emerging research demonstrates detrimental socio-economic and livelihood implications which emerge when development is led by outsiders or corporate interests.
This presentation will focus on an 8+ year community-based research partnership between Dr. Nick Mercer and the NunatuKavut Inuit community of Black Tickle, located on the subarctic tundra Island of Ponds, in southern Labrador. The research focuses on identifying and addressing community needs, integrating local knowledge and sustainability values, and mobilizing community-led initiatives to enhance island energy resilience.
