The search committee for the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, announces upcoming public presentations by each of the finalist candidates. UPEI faculty and staff are invited to attend a Wellness Check and Coffee Break on Friday, May 26, anytime between 10:00 am and noon. The event will be held at The McCain Foundation Learning Commons, AVC. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be provided. There will be a draw for two wellness baskets ($125 value each). 

 There will be a variety of booths, including

  • glucose and blood pressure checks 
  • mindfulness and meditation
  • a salt and sugar in food display
  • health screening information with the opportunity to discuss your health screening needs privately with a nurse practitioner 
  • chiropractic care
  • physical fitness test
  • health and safety (summer safety, hand hygiene and your health, tick safety, and food safety). Health and Safety will also draw for a $25 Bookstore and a $25 Fox & Crow gift card. 

The event is being coordinated by the UPEI Healthy Campus Committee.  

The PEI Firefighters Association will be on campus on Thursday, June 16, at 1:00 pm to provide fire extinguisher training to any interested staff members of the campus community. If you have never used a fire extinguisher, this is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience without any danger during fully simulated training.

This event will be held in the outdoor area in front of the Central Utility Building. There will be a 15-20 minute discussion followed by a hands-on simulation!

The Rhodes Scholarships program offers fully funded scholarships each year for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The Honourable Graydon Nicholas, a highly respected Wolastoqey Elder, lawyer, judge, social worker, and activist, will give a presentation titled “Inculturation in the Indigenous Context and Catholic Church” on Thursday, May 25, at 10 am, in Don and Marion McDougall Hall, Room 242, University of Prince Edward Island.

The lecture is hosted by the UPEI Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies, and the UPEI Mawi'omi Indigenous Student Centre. The event is free and open to the public. 

Originally from Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Nicholas is currently chancellor of St. Thomas University (STU). He served as lieutenant governor of New Brunswick from 2009–2014, becoming the first Indigenous person to hold the office. He has a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University, a Bachelor of Law from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), and a Master of Social Work degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. In 1991, Nicholas was appointed judge of the New Brunswick Provincial Court. He was the first Indigenous person in Atlantic Canada to earn a law degree and to be appointed a judge. He has received honorary degrees from St. Francis Xavier, Wilfrid Laurier, Mount Allison, and UNB. He has been given numerous awards for his long-standing community service, including the New Brunswick Human Rights Award, the Fredericton YMCA Peace Medallion, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.

Step on a rusty nail? Scratch yourself in the garden? Better look at your tetanus status! 

As we move into spring, people who enjoy working in the gardens or tackling renovations will get going on their projects. One of the issues that should be addressed is ensuring you are up to date with your tetanus boosters, which are due every 10 years. 

Tetanus is a serious and often deadly disease caused by bacteria that live in dirt, dust, and soil.  

What are the symptoms?

The toxin that is released into the body affects the nervous system, causing painful muscle spasms. The first symptom is usually a spasm of the jaw muscles ("lockjaw") followed by painful spasms of muscles in the face, neck, chest, abdomen, arms, and legs.

How is it spread?

Most people think they can get tetanus from stepping on a rusty nail. While this is true, you can get tetanus just as easily from a small scrape or a cut. You can get tetanus from any object that breaks open your skin while working in the garden or doing repairs to your home, or even from an animal bite.  

Who is at risk?

People of all ages can be affected by tetanus.

What vaccine is used to prevent it?

For adults: Tdap: Tetanus and diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine is most commonly used on PEI for adults, and it is recommended to receive a booster every 10 years for continued protection. If you have a PEI health card, you can access this vaccine at no cost at the UPEI Health and Wellness Centre and Public Health Nursing. If you do not have a health card, you can purchase the vaccine at cost at pharmacies or travel clinics.

This basic one-day course offers lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. 

The cost of registration will be covered by HSE for all UPEI faculty and staff, including students who require training for on-campus employment. Students who do not require training for on-campus employment are welcome to attend; however, the cost of registration will not be covered. Please note that lunch will not be provided.

In order to accommodate UPEI computer classroom and lab software adds, drops, or modifications for the 2023 fall semester, we have set a firm deadline of JUNE 01, 2023.

  • Version upgrades to existing software (Are multiple versions required? If yes, provide specifics.)

Research Ethics Board (REB) applications involving "more than minimal risk" must be reviewed by the full UPEI REB. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday, May 26, 2023, for review at the June 21 meeting.

Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve more than minimal risk, renewals, and amendments, may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary materials are received.

All research compliance applications, including for REB, must be submitted through the UPEI Researcher Portal (https://upei.researchservicesoffice.com/Romeo.Researcher/). Instructions for using the site are available at https://www.upei.ca/research-services/forms.
