Governance Review
We are pleased to share An external review of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Board Governance. This review is the result of a commitment made in the UPEI Action Plan: Building a Culture of Trust, Safety, and Inclusion to “Obtain a review on Board governance.”
The review was completed by Cheryl Foy of Strategic Governance, a recognized thought leader in university governance best practices. Cheryl is a former general counsel and secretary to two universities and the author of An Introduction to University Governance, a significant contributor to the Council of Ontario Universities' Leading Practices in University Board Governance publication, co-author of several recent governance reviews, speaker, writer, and advisor to over 30 Canadian universities.
As noted in the report, the review is anchored in governance best practices as they apply within the Canadian university context and was designed to model, reflect, and reinforce collegial processes and practices that are central in a shared university governance context. The review process sought to ensure the inclusion of community perspectives, and in particular the perspectives of faculty, staff, and students.
The UPEI Board of Governors is committed to making the changes necessary to achieve the objectives of the review to rebuild a foundation of sound and effective governance for UPEI. To this end, the Board is identifying priority actions to improve oversight, transparency and accountability. The Board will report to the UPEI community annually on progress made, including implemented and planned changes.
