Description: | Awarded to students enrolled in the B.Ed. program of the Faculty of Education that attended a PEI High School and are completing an international teaching placement within the same academic year. |
Background: | These bursaries are established through the estate of Irene Dorothy Wyand. Irene was born in Cavendish, PEI and became a teacher and principal. She authored three books, was a poet and an active member of her church -- the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Irene attended Prince of Wales College (Class of 1933) in Charlottetown. Later, she went to Ontario, where she received a BA degree specializing in history, French and music. In addition to her vocation, she served her church as a music director, organist and teacher. Irene also served as a missionary to Belgium and France from 1957-1959. She passed away in January 2007 at the age of 98. |
