Background: | The family of Harry and Marjorie MacLauchlan of Stanhope, PEI, have a remarkable history of giving to the Island community, including the University of Prince Edward Island. Their gifts have supported a variety of areas of need and have been significant in the development and growth of our province's only University. In July 2011, the family made another leadership gift to the University of Prince Edward Island to create a substantial program of awards to encourage and recognize student-writing achievement. The gift is to honour H. Wade MacLauchlan's twelve years of service as UPEI president and vice-chancellor and to recognize the importance of effective writing as a foundational skill for academic success and lifelong learning. The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing will be the largest such student-oriented prog ram in Canada. The MacLauchlan Prizes for Effective Writing award program will enrich the exceptional quality of education that UPEI offers its students and will enhance their lifelong success. Writing is a natural extension of human life and plays a tremendous role in personal and professional growth. Success as a knowledge-based society depends on a population that is able to communicate effectively. By celebrating writing excellence, these awards send a powerful signal regarding the collective importance of writing. It is the hope of the MacLauchlan family and UPEI that these prizes will serve as a catalyst for other university endeavours. |
