Background: | Norma May (Mason) Phelan grew up on a farm in Springfield, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. She was a switchboard operator in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and was posted in Newfoundland where she met and married Bill Phelan in 1955. When they relocated back to Nova Scotia, Norma worked as a switchboard operator at the Bank of Nova Scotia and Bill worked as a health inspector with the Department of Health. The couple lived in Shubenacadie. Norma's love for cats, particularly Siamese cats, grew on Bill as well. Norma and Bill volunteered with an animal shelter and supported the shelter through various fundraising activities. Based on her love for animals, Norma Phelan left a substantial residual bequest to the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island for students entering the veterinary medicine field who are in financial need to complete their studies. |
