| Description: | Awarded to a student who is a resident of PEI, is entering their final year of the Applied Human Science program, and has, in the opinion of the faculty, demonstrated a strong commitment to the program and an improved academic performance. |
| Background: | This award was established by Mrs. Helen MacDonald through a gift from her estate. Gordon and Helen MacDonald were community-minded people. They were very active in sports, community activities and youth work. During her 91 years, Mrs. MacDonald accomplished many things. She was instrumental in bringing about significant improvements in the PEI School System, such as the development of new high schools and the formation of the PEI Home and School Association, of which she was the founding president. For 16 years, she broadcast programs on home and school issues for radio and television. In addition, as an oral historian, she taped thousands of interviews of Islanders and other notable figures about their lives an d times. These time-capsule glimpses of interesting lives are housed in the PEI Public Archives. In 1966, she received the inaugural lifetime equality award from the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Mrs. MacDonald was awarded a Centennial Medal of Canada in 1967 and in recognition of her contributions to PEI, she was granted an Honorary L.L.D. from St. Dunstan's University in 1968. Mrs. MacDonald was a faithful member of her church and taught Sunday school and youth group. She volunteered on many provincial and national committees and boards. J. Gordon MacDonald operated the S.A. MacDonald department store from the 1930's to 1961. He provided leadership in the establishment of the first sheltered workshop in PEI and became its first Executive Director. He served as President of the PEI Red Cross, President to the Charlottetown Board of Trade and Councillor for the City of Charlottetown.
