Background: | This scholarship was established by John and Barbara Poole and family in memory of John's parents, Ernest E. and Gertrude (Annear) Poole. Ernest Edward Poole was born in Prince Edward Island in 1883. His great-grandfather, John Poole, settled in Brudenell, PEI, in 1808. Ernest E. Poole was educated in grade and high schools in his native province including Business College in Charlottetown. Following Business College, Ernest took up the study of architecture and reinforced concrete engineering. Ernest was associated with his father in the milling industry. In 1913, Ernest incorporated Poole Construction, Limited, and moved the company to Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1913, Ernest Poole married Gertrude Inez Annear who was also born in Prince Edward Island and was educated in the public schools and the Prince of Wales College, UPEI's predecessor institution. Ernest and Gertrude raised a family of four children: John, Ruth, George, and Inez. To commemorate Mr. and Mrs. Poole's memory in their native province, John and Barbara Poole created The Ernest E. and Gertrude Annear Poole Memorial Scholarship, which will assist UPEI research graduate students in achieving their educational goals and develop important research activity for our society. |
