| Background: | The Mermaid School Memorial Scholarship is established at the University of Prince Edward Island for the purpose of assisting a student entering the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Prince Edward Island. The Mermaid Women's Institute was established in 1950 to support the educational needs of their children attending the one room school in Mermaid. With the closing of the school in 1972 and the sale of the property in 2002, the Mermaid Women's Institute will continue to assist students with the establishment of the Mermaid School Memorial Scholarship. |
