Background: | The Congregation was founded in 1916 by Bishop Henry J. O'Leary whose vision was to initiate works of charity for spiritual and social development in the Diocese of Charlottetown. Sister Ellen Mary Cullen, first Congregational Leader, continued to advance this vision of God's call to holiness in Apostolic service. In the Constitutions which were approved by the Sacred Congregation of Religious in Rome, 1983, the Sisters of St. Martha find the way in which God calls them to be prophetic and joyful women in service to others. The Sisters of St. Martha have a deep-rooted history with education, and higher education in Prince Edward Island. The Sisters of the Congregation of St. Martha have contributed a number of student awards to the University of Prince Edward Island. |
