Background: | Harold B. Schurman, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Schurman, was born in Kensington in 1906. He received his primary education at the Summerside High School and then attended Mount Allison Academy, Acadia Collegiate School, and the Drafting School of Chicago. In 1929 he married Leila Alexandra Saunders, a daughter of the late Albert C. Saunders, a one-time Premier of Prince Edward Island and later a Justice of the Supreme Court. Harold Schurman started full-time work in his father firm, M.F. Schurman Company Limited in 1926 and two years later was given the responsibility of managing the woodworking factory. In 1931 he became a Director and Secretary-Treasurer. Shortly thereafter, Harold took on the Company's construction operation as his prime interest. He became President in 1952 and held that office until his death in 1982. He was a Director of The Bank of Canada and a member of the Advisory Board of Eastern Trust. Mr. Schurman died in 1989 and left a bequest to UPEI to establish bursaries for students in need. |
