Background: | The Estate of Dr. Constance Ida MacFarlane (1904-2000) established this award in memory of her father, Henry Havelock MacFarlane. Constance MacFarlane was born in Charlottetown in 1904. She graduate from Prince of Wales College in 1924, Dalhousie University (B.A. 1929 and M.Sc. 1931) and did post-graduate studies on marine algae at the University of Liverpool, England. Dr. MacFarlane taught for many years in various provinces. From 1949-70 Miss MacFarlane was Director of the Seaweeds Division of the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. She was internationally recognized for her research into the ecology and distribution of seaweeds, which was fundamental to the industrial development of seaweed in the Atlantic Provinces. She gained recognition as a world authority in her research on seaweed. She bequeathed a huge collection of dry plants specimens to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Halifax and her research and papers are conserved at the Nova Scotia archives. Dr. MacFarlane established several awards at the University of Prince Edward Island through her estate. |
