Background: | The Rotary Club of Hillsborough Nursing Award has been established at the University of Prince Edward Island to honour the outstanding contribution of UPEI President Emeritus CWJ Eliot, and to fulfill the Rotarian mandate to support education. During the presidency of Charles William John Eliot, C.M., B.A., M.A., Ph.D., D.C.L. from 1985-1995, the University of Prince Edward Island grew to include the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, saw the launch of a campaign to construct the KC Irving Chemistry Centre and renovate historic Cass Science Hall, the construction of the 1991 Young Canada Games Sports Centre, the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall and the beautification of the campus. As well as facilities that the University and the Island could be proud of, President Eliot left the young University a legacy of belief in itself; an outstanding model of academic scholarship, and strong leadership. For his exemplary demonstration of the motto of the University, "Faith, Service, Knowledge", the Rotary Club of Hillsborough establishes this award with grateful appreciation. |
