| Background: | The Honourable James M. Lee, P.C., LLB was a true Prince Edward Island patriot. He was a man of remarkable accomplishments, a dedicated public servant, business leader, a beloved member of the community and most importantly a devoted family man. His life was marked by a profound commitment to the betterment of Prince Edward Island, and his contributions will be remembered for generations to come. James was a Canadian politician who was the 26th premier of Prince Edward Island from 1981 to 1986, leading the PEI Progressive Conservative Party from 1981 to 1987. One of the most notable and proudest achievements for Premier Lee and his government was the successful negotiation with the federal government to establish a school of veterinary medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island to be known as the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC). In 2005, James was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of PrinceEdward Island for his determination to expand post-secondary education with the establishment of the AVC and his commitment to public service in PEI. James (Jim) was a man of outstanding character; his dedication to community, church, and local volunteerism earned him the respect and admiration of Islanders and Canadians alike. Most importantly Jim was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his lifelong partner and loving wife, Patsy, and survived by their three children, Laurie-Anne, Patti-Sue and Jason and families. To honour JimÕs legacy and his vision to advance the AVC as an academic institution for future generations, JimÕs family established an endowment in their father's name for an annual scholarship at the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI. |
