Background: | The Law Society is an independent, self-governing profession. The Society's main task is to regulate the practice of law within the province. The Law Society is governed by legislation passed by the PEI Legislature in 1992 called the Legal Profession Act. The Act outlines the Society's objectives as: to uphold and protect the public interest in the administration of justice; to establish standards for the education, professional responsibility, and competence of members and applicants for membership; to ensure the independence, integrity and honour of the Society and its members; to regulate the practice of law; and to uphold and protect the interests of members. The PEI Law Society/Law Foundation created an award in January 2009 to support UPEI students. In 2023, they increased the value of that award and added an additional award. In 2023, Mary Lynn Kane contacted the University of Prince Edward Island to establish an award for PEI students enrolled in any full-time program who is an Epekwitnewa'j Mi'kmaw. |
