Preference will be given to students who have been involved in extracurricular activities (i.e., community participation, leadership qualities, and/or the performing arts), and have an interest in pursuing bovine, pathology, wildlife or aquatic veterinary medicine. This scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years (including the entrance year). Each year, a new entrance student will be selected. If for any reason any successful candidate should discontinue studies in the DVM program at the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, and therefore lose eligibility for renewal of this scholarship, another candidate entering the same year of the original recipient will be chosen. |
Background: | The Walker Wood Foundation was established in 2006 by Neil C.W. Wood and his wife Susan following the sale of some of their corporate assets. The Walker Wood Foundation is dedicated to the funding of post-secondary education to candidates who have a high academic standing, demonstrated leadership or similar qualities and whom might have otherwise found it difficult to afford further education. Both Susan and Neil have travelled extensively throughout Canada in an effort to determine where these funds can be most effectively awarded within the various diverse regions of the country. Neil's father, a Medical Doctor in the U.K. who attended Medical School on a Carnegie Scholarship, inspired Neil and Susan to establish the Walker Wood Foundation. The Walker Wood Foundation currently gives awards to numerous Universities and Colleges across Canada. In the fall of 2022, the University of Prince Edward Island was honoured to have this scholarship for a student at its Atlantic Veterinary College [AVC]. In the fall of 2023, the Foundation decided to increase its support beginning in academic 2024, eventually supporting four students throughout their veterinary education. |
