Background: | The Nellie Aitken Memorial Award was established at the University of Prince Edward Island by the Prince Edward Island Language Teachers' Association to support and encourage aspiring educators, and to provide a fitting tribute to an exemplary Island educator. During her few short years in Prince Edward Island, Nellie Aitken served as a classroom teacher, a principal, and a district administrator. Her strong leadership qualities shone in all of these roles. She served as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Unit 3 Principals' Association. She was active in the Prince Edward Island Language Teachers' Association serving a two year term as president. During the years of educational reform, Nellie was very active in writing and presenting a numb er of briefs on behalf of the organization. As a principal, Nellie provided a wonderful example of how school administrators can empower teachers and instil in them the strong desire for excellence in their profession. In 1993, Nellie was awarded the Golden Apple Award by her peers for outstanding achievement and excellence in education. Nellie had many qualities that made her an outstanding educational leader. Perhaps most important was her combination of strength and determination tempered by her regard for people. She stood firm for what she believed and worked hard to get it. Yet she was full of warmth and compassion. She truly cared about people and was sensitive to their needs. Although Nellie worked very hard and was strongly committed to her profession, she had a wonderful sense of fun which was truly infectious. It was difficult not to feel uplifted in the wake of Nellie's optimism, her energy, and her sense of fun. The Nellie Aiken Memorial Award is presented to a student starting the second year of the Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates strong leadership, a passionate concern for the well-being of others, and who combines an infectious sense of fun with a deep commitment to her/his work in the field of education. Nellie passed away on November 12, 1994. |
