Description: | Granted on an annual basis to a student who has completed their first year of the veterinary medicine program and is a resident of New Brunswick. |
Background: | The NBVMA is the regulatory body for veterinarians and the practice of veterinary medicine in New Brunswick. Veterinarians must be members of the NBVMA in order to practice veterinary medicine in the province. The NBVMA welcomes all questions, comments or concerns regarding the practice of veterinary medicine in New Brunswick. Dr. Irving, a longstanding and proud member of the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, passed away in December 2018. He served on the CVMA executive for several years. He also sat on the Council on Education for the American Veterinary Medical Association. George was on the board of the Moncton SPCA and over the years several committees related to Atlantic harness racing. George's greatest passion was horse racing. He was involved in every aspect of the Standardbred horse industry. He served as director for the Maritimes at the United States Trotting Association for many years. He was introduced to horse racing by his father and drove in his first race at 16 years of age. This would be the start of a long history in breeding, raising, training, and racing Standardbreds. His love of harness racing was one activity he could still enjoy through print and simulcasting as his health deteriorated. Aside from his professional interests, he and his wife, Doreen, spent hours advocating for children with hearing loss. In the spring of 2021, the NBVMA established the Dr. George Irving Memorial Award to honour his work with the association and his dedication to the veterinarian profession. |
