Background: | This scholarship is created by family and friends in honour of Albert "Ab" M. Ferris (1939-2020), as a gift to remember his contributions to his family, his community, his work in the field of chartered accounting and to his training of accounting students at UPEI. Ab Ferris has always been a strong advocate for the accounting profession. He taught at the post-secondary level for 40 years, demonstrated a true love of the practice, supported every student he touched and encouraged many to achieve excellence in the field as a result of his guidance. In 27 years of teaching accounting at UPEI - he also taught the subject in Poland for seven years and for stints in Bermuda, Alberta and Montana - Ab sought out the trust, respect and even friendship of his students. His engagement and support in business helped drive prosperity and success in almost every sector. And yet he knew how to care for his community as well, and was a part of countless projects touching the lives of people wherever he lived. "If you showed the students that you care and that you have an interest in their wellbeing, they will do everything possible not to disappoint you," he says. "It's just such a rewarding experience to work with young people." And the outcomes did not disappoint Ferris. The graduates, he notes, for the large part were simply outstanding during his long run in teaching. Ab's career was broad both globally and professionally. In retirement he never slowed down, volunteering with his church, travelling and enjoying time with family and friends. |
