Background: | Dr. Peter Meincke came to PEI in 1978 to become the second President of the University of Prince Edward Island and be involved with the pioneering work of the Institute of Man and Resources. He helped to found the Institute for Island Studies, the first institute at UPEI. After his term as president ended, he taught mathematics and physics including a course on Energy Environment and the Economy and designed a course called Technological Innovation for Sustainable Development. In 1992, in partnership with the Institute of Island Studies, Dr. Meincke established the Small Islands Information Network, a virtual infrastructure for small island sustainable development. He cofounded Island Web Creations, and served on the board of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA). At the request of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), he prepared a discussion paper on networking Small Island Developing States for the UN Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States held in Barbados in April 1994. He was one of five senior consultants asked by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to prepare a feasibility study on SIDSnet for the UN General Assembly. He was the founding chairman of the Island Web Consortium. His conviction that small islands have an important role in finding the best road to sustainable development is described in his 1978 paper "What is the Right Size?" In support of this conviction, the Dr. Peter and Mrs. Donna Meincke Graduate Scholarship in Island Studies has been established at the University of Prince Edward Island to support Master of Arts in Island Studies graduate students in their pursuit of island studies. |
