UPEI announced today that the University and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1870), representing UPEI support staff, have reached a tentative agreement.

| Department Updates

Studying abroad can be one of the most rewarding opportunities during a university education. This school year, UPEI will have a record number of students studying abroad and hopes to see this upward trend continue. The Office of Study Abroad and International Partnerships is supporting approximately 150 students to go abroad between September 2022 and June 2023 to 18 countries around the world, such as Malta, Barbados, Belgium, Ireland, France, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Japan, Finland, and Australia.

Marine ecologist Dr. Irené Novaczek will give a presentation about the ecosystem restoration project at Basin Head on March 21 at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, UPEI.

| Athletics

The UPEI Men’s Hockey Panthers will welcome some of the best amateur hockey teams in the country when they host the U SPORTS 2023 Cavendish Farms University Cup Men’s Hockey Championship from March 16–19, 2023, at the Eastlink Centre, 46 Kensington Road, Charlottetown.

Dr. Edward Chung, director of Asian studies and professor of religious studies at UPEI, has received two grants totalling $621,850 to advance Korean and Asian studies at UPEI, including the creation of a new research centre focusing on this field, which will be the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada.

The first-ever UPEI Panther Pitch competition took place two years ago as part of the Harry W. MacLauchlan Entrepreneurship Program. This year, UPEI's Experiential Education Department is re-offering the program through March, culminating in a pitch competition in May.

Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Dennis King, Premier of Prince Edward Island, Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, Heath MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, Robert Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, the Honourable Ernie Hudson, Minister of Health and Wellness, the Honourable Cory Deagle, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, and Dr. Greg Keefe, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island, announced more than $48.8 million in joint funding for the new health education building that will house the new Faculty of Medicine on the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) campus.

The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) and the Department of Psychology in the Faculties of Arts and Science at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) are recruiting veterinarians for a new research project.
