IDW Brown Bag Lunch Series – “AVC Makes a Difference”
Event Date:
Wednesday, February 4, 2015, 11:30 am
Room:
Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building
Join Dr. Shauna Richards and Dr. Crawford Revie for two presentations as a part of UPEI's International Development Week on Wednesday, February 4 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building.
Dr. Richards presentation, entitled “Improving Dairy Farming in Kenya,” will focus on her research on cow nutrition. She hopes to improve the production of smallholder dairy farms and provide a possible pathway out of poverty for farmers and their families. Additional research goals are to improve cow welfare which will also lead to improved dairy production and better living conditions for cows.
Dr. Revie's presentation is entitled “What relevance does Big Data have to health care in developing economies?” It seems 2014 was the year of Big Data with an increasing appreciation that the scale and shape of our digital landscapes are rapidly changing. However, in many low middle income country settings, the availability of data to address key questions and enhance capacity to bring about change is limited at best. Some of these data gap issues will be explored in a new project on the use of smart-phone and Cloud technologies to improve disease diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of cattle in rural Ethiopia.
Light refreshments will be provided, and a door prize will be given out to one lucky attendee!
