Term:

The term is from May 22 to June 30 (Explore) and July 15 to August 23 (summer high school groups), 2024.  (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding, and departmental requirements) 

The English Language Centre (ELC) will be offering EAL Customized programs that include the Explore Program for Canadian and International students ages 19+ and several short-term high school programs for visiting international groups between May and August 2024.  Participants in these EAL Customized programs have formal EAL lessons weekday mornings and organized socio-cultural activities during weekday afternoons, and weekends.  EAL Instructors are responsible for the planning and delivery of daily lessons, each week.  The ELC will be hiring up to two EAL instructors to work in these programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructors report directly to the Explore Program Manager and Manager of Customized EAL Programs. They are responsible for:

  • EAL instruction
  • Collaborative course design and planning, based on pre-determined weekly themes and ELC guidelines       
  • Student assessment during the program and summative evaluations of student achievement
  • Participation in staff meetings
  • Design and lead one afternoon educational outing per week
  • Creating a positive learning environment
  • Upholding the policies of and regulations of the UPEI English Language Centre
  • Other duties as assigned by the above managers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.Ed or other degree with equivalent work experience
  • EAL teaching experience  
  • Excellent oral and written proficiency in English
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Current criminal record check including working with the vulnerable sector 

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • EAL teaching certificate / Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language
  • Experience working in cross-cultural settings
  • Previous experience with UPEI Explore or EAL Customized Programs is an asset
