The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Prince Edward Island welcomes applications for a tenure-track position in Anthropology. This position opens at a dynamic time in the Department as we develop thematic streams of focus operating in conjunction with the University’s strategic and academic priorities. We aim to intensify interdisciplinary linkages across the campus, including Faculty of Arts programs in Diversity and Social Justice Studies (DSJS), Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture (ACLC), the Faculty of Science program in Environmental Studies, and\or linkages to the Faculty of Education in its developing focus in Indigenous studies and knowledge. We are also a faculty committed to developing students as research scholars as part of their undergraduate experience. In view of this we favour experiential learning inside and outside the classroom. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

The prospective candidate will ideally contribute to two or more of the following topical areas: a) the anthropology of the environment/ecological anthropology; b) media and digital anthropology; c) political economy; and d) Indigenous cultures in colonial and present contexts. The ability to teach a culture area course in one of the following areas will be considered an asset: the Caribbean, Indigenous societies of North America, the Middle East, South America, South Asia, or Southeast and East Asia. Other areas of expertise that can complement departmental strengths will also be given consideration.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must have a completed, or nearly completed, doctoral degree in anthropology, a record of successful teaching, a dynamic or promising record of scholarly research and publishing, a commitment to collegial and collaborative relationships, and a capacity and interest in working across disciplines. In accordance with the UPEI Strategic Plan, the ability to involve students in research projects will be considered an asset.

This faculty appointment will be for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary will be determined according to rank and experience, as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
