Description: Awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry enrolled in or entering a Master of Science or PhD program within the Faculty of Science.
Background: Dr Arnold Hiltz was born in Sea View, PEI in 1924. He enrolled at Prince of Wales College, one of UPEI's predecessor institution in 1940 with a Provincial Scholarship for Queen's County, and was in the first class of the newly initiated 'Two Years in One" program offered at that institution. Upon graduation, he entered the Royal Canadian Air Force from which he was honorably discharged as a Flying Officer in 1945. He returned to Prince of Wales College for an additional year of study . He earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Acadia University in 1947 and a Ph.D. degree from McGill University in 1952. He had a 27-year career with General Electric, first as a senior scientist and then as manager of materials applications for GE's spacecraft operations division. His expertise has been called upon by NASA. He has published 27 papers in the field of chemistry and has been awarded four US patents. During his career, he undertook independent theological study and was ordained in the Episcopal Church. While residing in Pennsylvania, Arnold and his wife, Margery, lived in Prince Edward Island at The Hebrides during the summer months and other times during the year. In 2004 Arnold Hiltz was recognized by the University of Prince Edward Island through an honorary doctorate degree. Dr. Hiltz passed away in 2009.
