Scholarship Type: Award
Description: Awarded to an adult learner who is studying part-time toward an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate and has identifiable community service through volunteerism and is in financial need.
Background: In 1997, the Director of the UPEI Department of Extension and Summer Sessions requested that Rural Development Council funds from a maturing deposit and funds from a miscellaneous UPEI account be combined and endowed to create an adult certificate fund. The Rural Development Council functioned as a community development organization in the late 1960's and 1970's and had as one of its objectives the enhancement of adult education in Prince Edward Island. While the fund was established , no award had been provided as of the creation of these terms. In 2011, these terms were established in consultation with the Director of Life-long Learning. The Centre for Life-long Learning develops and delivers a broad range of continuing education courses and workshops, summer institutes, language programs, and other services to help meet the needs of life-long learners. Located in Don and Marion MacDougall Hall, the Centre offers short courses, online courses, credit and non-credit certificates, and customized training. In addition, the Centre provides advice and support for adult learners wishing to return to school.
