Background: This scholarship was created in honour of Bill Ledwell, a graduate of St. Dunstan's University in 1949. Bill was an active member of that university's Alumni Association and in 1984 he was instrumental in reactivating the reunions of St. Dunstan's graduates. Bill may have been best known for his sports column which appeared in The Evening Patriot for 37 years as well as his writing talents that have been recognized in publications such as Time Magazine, The Toronto Star and Atlantic Insight. Bill served his community well as librarian, newspaper editor, talk show host, teacher, directory of education media, supervisor of the Media Centre and as National Film Board representative. While remaining loyal to his St. Dunstan's roots, Bill took on an allegiance to UPEI. In addition to his enthusiasm for university sports, he had been supportive of many other activities of the University, such as student debates, public forums, public lectures, theatre productions, convocations and alumni events. Bill was the first recipient of the UPEI Alumni Association's "Distinguished Alumni Award" in 1990.
