Eleven (11) Month Term Position - Indigenous Science and Education
Contract:

The Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Education, at the University of Prince Edward Island invite applications for an 11 month term position at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor, depending on qualifications. This appointment is subject to final budgetary approval.

UPEI is a small, dynamic university with a strong commitment to teaching and research excellence. The new Bachelor of Science programme in Applied Climate Change and Adaptation is now offered through the Faculty of Science (http://www.upei.ca/climate). The successful candidate will be assigned to teach ACC2030 Indigenous Knowledge in Climate Change Adaptation, a core course in the first year of this programme, and potentially one or more other courses in the Faculties of Science or Education.

In addition, and supported by two other Indigenous professors in the Faculty of Education, the successful candidate may be asked to assist other courses across the Faculties of Science and Education in discussing questions, concerns, ideas, and directions in thinking about what “indigenizing” means and how it affects teaching and learning; as well as representing Indigenous views on faculty or university-wide committees.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing the curriculum for applying the concept of Etuaptmumk, or Two-Eyed Seeing, into higher education at the new UPEI Bachelor of Science program in Applied Climate Change and Adaptation. Two-Eyed Seeing leverages the strengths of Indigenous knowledge, Western knowledges, and the different ways of knowing in designing and executing learning and education.

The position will begin August 1, 2019 or by arrangement. Applicants must hold at least a Master of Science in an environmental-related field (for example, geography, planning, biology or other life sciences), and must have documented experience working in the field of climate change. Demonstrated experience working with government, non-government organizations, and communities is considered an asset, as is experience teaching K-12 or other related teaching experiences.  Applicants must, at application, declare that they self-identify as an Indigenous (First Nations – status or nonstatus, Métis or Inuit) Canadian.

The application package should include your curriculum vitae and statement of teaching philosophy, as well as the names and email addresses of three references. All materials are to be sent by email to the Office of the Dean of Science at kegraham@upei.ca

In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. UPEI is committed to the principle of equity in employment.

Review of applications will begin on July 23, 2019, and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified.
