UPEI extends condolences on the passing of retired professor Ivan Dowling

The UPEI community is saddened by the death of retired professor of mathematics John "Ivan" Dowling who passed away Friday, September 6, 2019. 

Professor Dowling was a Charlottetown native and graduated from Prince of Wales College and Saint Dunstan’s University. He went from there to earn a Master’s degree in mathematics at Notre Dame University. Following a number of teaching posts, he came home in 1966 to chair the mathematics department at SDU, and played an instrumental role when SDU and PWC transitioned to UPEI in 1969. In 1976, he became the Dean of Science, a post he held for nine years. Well known for his classes in calculus and statistics, he taught mathematics at UPEI until he retired in 1995 and then continued to teach at the PEI Seniors College.

UPEI extends condolences to his wife Julie, sons Adam and Steven, and their families and friends. Visiting hours will be held at Belvedere Funeral Home on Friday, September 13, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 10:00 am. Donations in Professor Dowling’s memory may be made to the UPEI MBA Healthy Living Leadership Endowment Fund, which was established by his son Steven.
