In an effort to maximize offensive efficiency, the UPEI Women’s Basketball Panthers has made a strategic move by recruiting Naki Alonzo, a traditional pass-first point guard.

Alonzo brings a new dimension to the team that head coach Matt Gamblin is excited to explore.

“Naki is a pure point guard. She sees the floor really well and has the characteristics of a floor general who can set and control the tempo,” Gamblin said. “Being able to create an advantage off the dribble and by moving the defence with the pass is something we've struggled with, and that’s where Naki can help us.”

Alonzo brings a wealth of experience to the Panthers after spending the past five seasons with the GTA Blues of the JUEL of Ontario. She also had a stint with Scarborough Prep of the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) in 2022–23 where her play earned her all-star consideration.

“My greatest strength in terms of skills is my basketball IQ. I have a deep understanding of the game, which allows me to anticipate opponents’ moves, make quick decisions under pressure, and find openings in the defence,” she said. “I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to contribute to the team’s success, whether it’s scoring, distributing the ball, or locking down opponents on defence.”

The 18-year-old, who will study psychology in the fall, said she is eager to join the Panthers and continue her journey of player development and leadership. She believes UPEI is the best fit for her.

“I understand that success requires constant growth and adaptation, and I’m committed to pushing myself and my teammates to achieve our full potential on the court and in the classroom.”

Gamblin believes Alonzo will fit in nicely from day one.

“We expect Naki to make an impact right away. She loves the game and is a hard worker who wants to continually improve.”
