Faculty of Medicine
The University of Prince Edward Island has established a Faculty of Medicine to house a regional campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland's Faculty of Medicine. The UPEI site will operate as a regional campus of Memorial until a future joint degree is eventually established.
This university-to-university partnership brings together the strengths of both institutions—rural and family medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, paramedicine, veterinary medicine, climate change and adaptation, and sustainable design engineering. A UPEI-based campus will increase training opportunities for future family doctors and general specialists and support the medical career aspirations of Island youth.
The long-term goal is to develop a medical school at UPEI that is made in PEI for all of PEI, featuring a “unique-in-Canada” joint Doctor of Medicine degree with Memorial University to meet the needs of Islanders from tip to tip.

The regional campus program will use Memorial’s established curriculum. This partnership means we’re not starting from scratch, allowing us to accelerate our planning.
The accreditation process ensures a medical school delivers high-quality, dynamic, and innovative academic programming to our learners while enabling the faculty to be exceptional teachers. The accreditation process to operate as a regional campus under Memorial’s accreditation banner is progressing well and is a fluid and iterative process.
UPEI’s first intake of students will begin their studies in August 2025 at UPEI's regional campus of Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine. When Joint program approval from CACMS and our regional regulatory agencies (AACHHR and MPHEC) is achieved, students will eventually be enrolled in the UPEI Faculty of Medicine/Memorial University Joint Doctor of Medicine program.
